Overview
The IAS exam consist of two parts, the Prelims and the Mains. The IAS Preliminaries or Prelims is now also known as Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). Only candidates who pass the Prelims or CSAT can appear for the Mains Exam. The CSAT consists of two papers.

Key Features
This book contains collected questions from the past eighteen years of the IAS Prelims. The questions and their solutions are neatly organized into forty-nine different topics, covering the syllabus for the exam. The topics are grouped under eight different units. These correspond to the subjects covered in the IAS Prelims syllabus. The subjects are History, Polity, Geography, General Science, Economic and Social Development, Mental Ability, Current Affairs and General Knowledge.
Unit A is History of India. The topics covered include ancient, medieval and modern history, and the history of the Indian National Movement. Unit B, Geography, examines physical and political geography, agriculture, and Indian geography.
Unit C focuses on Indian Polity and Governance. The questions in this section are on India’s political system and the Constitution. It also covers the judiciary, panchayat, and rights issues and public policy.
Unit D is Economic Social Development. This unit examines the structure of the Indian economy, Indian industries and agriculture. The questions also focus on the topics of planning and economic development, and the tertiary sector in the economy.
Unit E covers the General Science subjects of physics, chemistry and biology. In addition, it also includes the subjects of ecology, biodiversity and climate change.
Unit F focuses on the Mental Ability and Management Ability topics. It covers arithmetic, analytical and logical reasoning, data interpretation, geometry and mensuration, permutation & combination and probability, and time and distance. This unit also contains questions on English language comprehension, general comprehension and communication, interpersonal skills and decision making.
The last two units cover General Knowledge and Current Affairs. All the questions in IAS Prelims exams from 1995 to 2012 have been neatly divided into the relevant topics and put under the corresponding headings in the book. The questions in each topic are split into smaller groups and at the end of each group the answers are given.
Detailed solutions are also provided wherever necessary. Care has been taken to get the answers as accurate as possible. Prelims 18 Years Civil Services (IAS) (General Studies Topic Wise Solved Papers (1995-2012) is a good textbook for a syllabus-wide review as well as practice before the exam.
